Week 4: Featured Teacher

Holly Janssen

Ms. Janssen’s Favorite Books That She Wants to Share With You!

    What a Wonderful World

What a Wonderful World is an illustrated version of the song by the same title and is simply beautiful. The illustrations are vivid and lively! The lyrics of the song may be used to ignite discussions about the beauty all around us, the things that make us happy, and what we are grateful for. A wonderful starting place for preschool appropriate lesson on gratitude, love or a number of other potentially weighty topics.

    Hippos Go Berserk!

This counting book for very young children is cute, quick and funny. I love all Sandra Boynton books (hard to choose a favorite)! Other good ones from Boynton include “Philadelphia Chickens” (which comes with a great CD) and “Barnyard Dance”!

    The Maggie B

The Maggie B tells a story of a big sister who takes good care of her baby brother on an imaginary sea ship. It was one of my favorites as a child. The beautiful illustrations encourage imagination and to this day I like to picture myself aboard that cozy ship.

    This is Not My Hat

This is Not My Hat is a joy to read for kids and adults! It is funny and clever with wonderful illustrations. It is also nice and short so it keeps young children’s attention and can be read over and over again!

About Ms. Janssen

  • Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I recently graduated with a degree in Child Development from Tufts University. I have worked as a preschool teacher and most recently a nanny. I worked for about a year in a preschool in Somerville and currently work in Wellesley. I have worked with children from infants to six year olds! My interests in early childhood education include serving children with diverse/special needs, inclusion programs, and promoting positive social-emotional development (particularly focusing on self-regulation, conflict resolution and perspective taking skills).

  • Can you share something you find special about the children you teach?

My favorite thing about children is that they do not find themselves constrained by the same societal pressures and expectations as adults. They are free to be silly, imaginative, and emotive in ways that most adults do not feel free to be.

  • Do you have any thoughts on reading with children that you’d like to share?

Reading with children is perhaps the easiest way to start conversations about the world we live in. Books can help broach difficult topics from anger and jealousy to poverty and racism. They can also inspire creativity, ignite the imagination, and best of all, they can make us laugh! The most important thing to do while reading with children is to discuss beyond the words on the page. I often ask children what they see in the pictures, what they think the characters are feeling, and what they think will happen next!

Thank you, Ms. Janssen, for being a dedicated teacher and for sharing your selections with us!
